After months of juggling work, school runs, extra murals, content creation and trying to remember when last my husband and I actually had uninterrupted adult conversation without someone asking for snacks 😂, we decided it was finally time for a romantic weekend getaway. Qurtuba Resort Johannesburg ended up being exactly the romantic escape we didn’t realise we desperately needed.

With our son away in Cape Town for the holidays, we wanted somewhere peaceful enough to switch off and relax, but still close enough that we wouldn’t spend half the weekend driving to the destination questioning our life choices. That’s how we found ourselves at Qurtuba, tucked away in the quiet surroundings of Linbro Park, hidden from the chaos of city life but still close enough to everything.

What started as a simple couples escape quickly turned into so much more.

Qurtuba, founded by Sahair Banu (Sahair Bint Ismail), is a family-run destination where hospitality feels genuinely personal. During our stay, we met Muhammad, one of the grandsons, who somehow convinced us we were professional padel players after one game. Between padel, archery, laughs and hang out chats, the weekend quickly started feeling less like a hotel stay and more like spending time with people who genuinely love what they’ve built.

As a fully halaal resort open to everyone, Qurtuba blends relaxation, connection and culture in a way that feels both refreshing and incredibly welcoming.

Hidden Away From The City Chaos

The moment we arrived at Qurtuba Resort Johannesburg, it didn’t even feel like we were still in Johannesburg.

Hidden away in Linbro Park, the resort feels worlds away from the usual city chaos, traffic, deadlines and the daily “what are we eating tonight?” debates. From the moment you walk onto the property, the Moorish-inspired architecture, earthy tones and tranquil gardens instantly transport you straight to Morocco.

And listen… I still can’t believe a place like this exists in the middle of Joburg.

What made the experience even more special though was the personal touch behind it all. Founded by Sahair Banu (Sahair Bint Ismail), who is still actively involved in the day-to-day running of the resort, Qurtuba doesn’t have that cold “check in and disappear” hotel feeling.

Instead, the family is constantly around, greeting guests, helping out and chatting to people in a way that feels genuinely warm and welcoming rather than rehearsed.

It’s the kind of place that naturally makes you slow down a little… mostly because suddenly nobody can find you to ask what’s for supper.

Our Glamping Room At Qurtuba Resort Johannesburg

We stayed in the Glamping Room at Qurtuba and somewhere between the outdoor shower, the freestanding bath and the peaceful garden surroundings, I realised how badly we needed a weekend where we could be adults… without actually having to adult.

The room perfectly balances luxury with that cozy glamping atmosphere, warm wooden finishes, earthy tones, soft lighting and massive glass doors that make nature feel like part of the room itself. It felt stylish and peaceful without trying too hard, which honestly matched our mood for the weekend.

One thing about me? The minute there’s a beautiful bath involved, suddenly I’m filming cinematic content and acting like I’m on a luxury retreat in Bali.

The room also had a little kitchenette area which made the stay feel even more comfortable, especially during those lazy moments where leaving the room started feeling like unnecessary admin.

But my favourite part had to be the outdoor shower.

There’s just something about showering outdoors surrounded by nature that tricks you into believing you’re deep in a luxury safari lodge somewhere in the bush… not still in Johannesburg with emails waiting for you at home.

The entire space felt peaceful, private and incredibly relaxing, exactly what we needed after months of nonstop schedules and everyday chaos.

Activities, Competition & Mild Embarrassment

Qurtuba Resort Johannesburg is one of those places where you arrive thinking you’re going to relax peacefully… and then suddenly you’re aggressively competing against your spouse in padel like it’s the Olympics.

The resort has a surprisingly huge range of activities on offer, from padel tennis and archery to horse riding, mini golf, entertainment games and even an animal farm for the kids.

Naturally, we headed straight for the padel courts because confidence is free.

Qurtuba is actually well known for its padel courts and tournaments, and thanks to Muhammad, one of the grandsons of founder Sahair Banu, we got a fun introduction to the sport. Somewhere between missed shots, unnecessary confidence and pretending we totally understood the rules, we realised padel is much harder than it looks.

Then came archery.

Now listen… there’s something deeply humbling about confidently aiming at a target only for the arrow to completely ignore your plans.

Qurtubah specialises in Mamluk Traditional Archery, which has deep historical and spiritual roots, so while we arrived thinking “cute little activity,” we actually left appreciating the skill, patience and focus behind it.

Also… upper body strength. Because apparently archery is not just vibes.

What I loved though is that none of the activities felt rushed or overly commercialised. Everything still carried that relaxed, family atmosphere where people are genuinely there to enjoy themselves.

And if you’re travelling with kids? Trust me, they will not be bored.

Family-Friendly Activities At Qurtuba Resort Johannesburg

Qurtuba worked perfectly for our romantic getaway, but what surprised me most is how family-friendly the resort actually is too.

There’s genuinely enough to keep kids entertained without parents having to hear “I’m bored” every 17 minutes.

From pony rides and horse riding experiences to mini golf, entertainment games, swimming pools and even a little animal farm, the resort feels designed for families who want activities without the overwhelming theme park energy.

I also got to do a horse ride during our stay and for a few peaceful minutes I fully convinced myself I belonged in a countryside movie somewhere far away from emails and responsibilities.

And then there’s the indoor heated saltwater pool…

Listen. Once I got in there, I genuinely did not want to come out. Between the warm water and peaceful atmosphere, it quickly became one of my favourite parts of the resort.

There’s also outdoor pool facilities, kiddies splash areas, braai spaces, gym facilities and dedicated prayer areas which makes longer stays feel really comfortable and convenient.

It’s the kind of place where families can stay busy while still feeling relaxed, which feels rarer than it should these days.

Limoni Restaurant At Qurtuba Resort

If there’s good food involved, I suddenly forget every “healthy eating starts Monday” promise I’ve ever made 😂

Located right on the Qurtuba Resort property, Limoni Restaurant made it dangerously easy to stay in full holiday mode without ever needing to leave the resort. The restaurant blends beautifully into the Moroccan-inspired atmosphere of the resort, with elegant interiors, warm lighting and that calm relaxed feeling that somehow makes every meal feel fancier.

As a SANHA-approved restaurant, Limoni caters for both Muslim and non-Muslim guests and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

What I loved most is that it doesn’t feel like your typical hotel restaurant where you eat once and forget about it. The food actually becomes part of the experience.

What You Can Expect At Limoni Restaurant

• Buffet breakfasts with a mix of classic favourites and Moroccan-inspired dishes
• Freshly baked breads, pastries, fruit platters and hot breakfast options
• Clay oven pizzas with perfectly crispy bases and generous toppings
• Dine-in, takeaway and catering options
• A beautiful relaxed setting perfect for date nights, family meals or lazy brunches
• Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Whether we were grabbing coffee, sitting down for dinner or just slowing down between activities, Limoni quickly became one of those places where you somehow end up staying longer than planned.

Rumaan Spa

To finish off a weekend of pure bliss, I temporarily abandoned my husband and disappeared into Rumaan Spa

Located right on the Qurtuba Resort property, the spa instantly feels peaceful the moment you walk in. Soft lighting, calming scents and the kind of quiet atmosphere that automatically lowers your stress levels.

I booked a full body massage together with the Japanese Head Massage and safe to say… I was asleep at some point. The Japanese Head Massage was incredible and easily one of my favourite parts of the entire weekend. Between the gentle scalp massage and relaxing pressure techniques, my brain fully logged out for the day.

Rumaan Spa also has a Himalayan Salt Room designed to promote relaxation and overall wellness, adding even more to that calm reset-your-life energy.

After months of nonstop schedules, work, content creation and everyday chaos, this was definitely what I needed.

Final Mosaic Memories & Moroccan Magic ✨

What started as a simple couples getaway somehow turned into one of those weekends we kept talking about long after we got home.

Between the peaceful atmosphere, Moroccan-inspired spaces, incredible food, endless activities and genuinely warm hospitality, Qurtuba Resort Johannesburg felt like the kind of place where you can completely switch off without ever feeling bored.

One minute we were confidently playing padel like future Olympians, the next I was floating in the heated pool refusing to leave, and somewhere in between I disappeared into the spa while my husband was temporarily left to fend for himself.

What I loved most though is that Qurtuba somehow manages to work for everyone. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, family weekend, girls getaway or even just a quick break from the city, the resort creates an experience that feels peaceful, welcoming and genuinely memorable.

And the best part? You don’t actually need to stay over to enjoy many of the facilities. From the spa and restaurant to the padel courts and activities, Qurtuba is also perfect for day visitors looking for a little escape from the city.

But honestly? You’d be doing yourself an injustice not experiencing the full stay at least once.

Because somewhere between the Moroccan architecture, heated pool sessions, spa naps and late-night laughs, Qurtuba Resort Johannesburg really does make you forget you’re still in Johannesburg.

Safe to say we’ll definitely be back again… although next time we might have to bring our smallie along because the jealousy after hearing about heated pools, horse rides and animal farms was very real.

xoxo
