Airlink's new direct Zanzibar flights are making this tropical island paradise more accessible for South African travellers, and having recently visited Zanzibar myself, I can see why that's exciting news.

Cape Town to Zanzibar direct flights are making it easier than ever for South Africans to visit Zanzibar.

Having travelled to Zanzibar with another very popular low-cost airline, which was great by the way, it’s also exciting to see a new kid on the block. Because trust me, my Zanzibar trip definitely wasn’t my first and last visit to this beautiful island.

The island is just a few hours from South Africa, but here’s the kicker. Until now, travellers flying from Cape Town had to connect through Johannesburg before heading off to Zanzibar. As an ex-Capetonian, I know this has been a long time coming. While Joburg travellers enjoyed direct access to Zanzibar, Cape Town travellers always had an extra flight standing between them and island life.

Now that’s all changing. Airlink recently launched direct Johannesburg to Zanzibar flights and will soon introduce the first-ever direct Cape Town to Zanzibar route, making this tropical island paradise even more accessible for Western Cape travellers.

And if you’ve ever stood ankle-deep in Zanzibar’s crystal-clear waters, wandered through the winding streets of Stone Town or watched a dhow sail across the Indian Ocean at sunset, you’ll understand exactly why that’s exciting news.

What's New?

Airlink officially launched its Johannesburg to Zanzibar route on 3 June 2026, giving South Africans another direct option to reach one of East Africa’s most sought-after island destinations.

But the news doesn’t stop there.

Later this year, Airlink will also introduce the first-ever direct Cape Town to Zanzibar route. The introduction of Cape Town to Zanzibar direct flights is great news for travellers looking for an easy island escape.

As an ex-Capetonian myself, I know this has been a long time coming. While Joburg travellers enjoyed direct access to Zanzibar, Cape Town travellers always had an extra flight standing between them and island life.

More flight options are always a win in my books. Not only does it give travellers more flexibility, but it also makes planning that dream beach escape a little bit easier.

And if you’re wondering whether Zanzibar is worth adding to your travel wish list, let me put it this way, I came home with hundreds of photos, countless memories and a growing suspicion that one trip to Zanzibar is never enough.

Why Cape Town to Zanzibar Direct Flights Matter

When most South Africans think of an island holiday, Mauritius is usually one of the first destinations that comes to mind.

But Zanzibar has quietly been becoming one of the most attractive island getaways for local travellers, and for good reason.

The flight time is surprisingly short. Johannesburg travellers can now reach Zanzibar in around three hours, while Cape Town travellers will soon be able to enjoy a direct route of around five hours.

For anyone looking for a tropical island escape without spending an entire day travelling, that’s a game changer.

Whether you’re planning a family holiday, a romantic getaway or simply need a few days of sunshine and sea air, Zanzibar offers that “far away” feeling without actually being all that far from home.

More Flights, More Choice

One thing I always like to see is more airlines entering a route.

Not only does it give travellers more choice when booking their holidays, but healthy competition can also be good news for pricing. While nobody can predict future fares, having more than one airline operating a popular route gives travellers the opportunity to compare schedules, prices and travel options.

It’s also good news for Zanzibar itself.

More flights generally mean more visitors, and more visitors support the hotels, restaurants, tour operators, guides and small businesses that make tourism such an important part of the island’s economy.

As someone who has visited Zanzibar, it’s great to see more airlines recognising the destination’s growing popularity with South African travellers.

The easier it becomes to get there, the more people will have the opportunity to experience this beautiful island for themselves.

A Win for Cape Town Travellers

For years, travelling to Zanzibar from Cape Town usually meant adding an extra stop to the journey. While it wasn’t a dealbreaker, it did add extra travel time to what is otherwise a relatively short island getaway.

The introduction of Cape Town to Zanzibar direct flights changes that.

For Western Cape travellers, it means getting from city life to island life with less hassle and more time spent enjoying the destination. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, family holiday or quick beach break, direct access makes the journey that much simpler.

And as demand for Zanzibar continues to grow among South African travellers, having more flight options available can only be a good thing.

Final Thoughts

The launch of Cape Town to Zanzibar direct flights is exciting news for South African travellers and another positive step for tourism between the two destinations.

As someone who has visited Zanzibar, I can honestly say it’s one of those places that feels much further away than it actually is. Within a few hours, you can swap city life for turquoise waters, palm-lined beaches and a completely different pace of life.

More flight options mean more choice for travellers, greater accessibility and potentially more competitive pricing, all of which make destinations like Zanzibar even more appealing.

Whether you’re planning a family holiday, a romantic getaway or simply looking for your next island escape, getting there just became a whole lot easier.

And if Zanzibar wasn’t already on your travel wish list, now might be the perfect time to add it.
