Planning a family escape to Hermanus? You’re in for a treat! This coastal town has so much to offer for kids and adults alike, from whale watching to local markets, there’s never a dull moment. Here’s a fun, relaxed guide to help you plan your next family adventure in Hermanus.

1. Go Whale Watching
This is an absolute must-do if you’re visiting between June and November. Hermanus is one of the best places in the world to see southern right whales from the shore, or even better, hop on a boat tour like we did with Southern Right Charters. It’s an unforgettable experience for the whole family. The kids will be amazed, and trust me, so will you. Dress warmly and bring a camera!

2. Visit the Hermanus Country Market
Held every Saturday, this market is buzzing with energy and local flavour. From fresh produce and local treats to handmade crafts, toys, and live music, it’s a great place to stroll and snack while supporting small businesses. There’s always something for everyone we picked up some cute doughnut earrings and a fridge magnet as fun keepsakes. There’s also a play area for kids, coffee stands for tired parents, and plenty of shaded seating to take a breather. You’ll find artisanal cheeses, preserves, baked goods, and vibrant arts and crafts. Local musicians often perform, creating a lively atmosphere. The market is dog-friendly too, so the whole family can come along.
3. Explore Grotto Beach
This Blue Flag beach is clean, safe, and perfect for a relaxed family day out. Kids can splash in the waves or build sandcastles while parents enjoy the sea breeze and a laid-back vibe. The beach is huge and has lifeguards on duty, which adds peace of mind. You’ll find clean bathrooms, picnic spots, and ample parking nearby. Plus, Dutchies Restaurant is right there for when the tummies start to rumble. There’s also a lovely grassy area behind the beach with shaded benches, great for picnic lunches or a little downtime out of the sun. You can even take a short walk along the shoreline for beautiful views of the mountains hugging the coast. It’s a perfect mix of sun, sea, and comfort ideal for creating those classic beach day memories.

4. Have a Meal at Dutchies
Whether you’re into seafood or mocktails, this beachfront gem delivers on both taste and atmosphere. We sat outside, soaking up the sun while enjoying delicious sushi, trying snails for the first time (a big deal!), and sipping on fruity summer mocktails. The view of the ocean and mountains is the cherry on top. Dutchies has a super relaxed but stylish vibe, with white umbrellas and wooden deck seating giving it that perfect beachy feel. The service was friendly, and our food came out fresh and full of flavour. If you’ve got kids, the casual setting makes it family-friendly, and the variety on the menu means everyone will find something they love. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend an entire afternoon just soaking it all in.
5. Check Out Bientang's Cave Restaurant
Built into a real cave right on the rocks, this one’s a dining experience your family won’t forget. The sound of waves crashing as you eat is so soothing, and the menu has something for everyone. We went for the vegetarian mezze platter and crispy fried hake, both were winners!
But beyond the food, it’s the setting that truly makes Bientang’s Cave special. The natural rock walls, the salty sea air, and the way the tables are tucked into the cliffside make it feel like a hidden gem. The views are absolutely unbeatable, we could see waves rolling in just metres from our table, and even caught a glimpse of a whale in the distance. It’s a magical place where nature and dining blend together perfectly.
The restaurant is well-known for its seafood dishes, but also caters for a range of dietary preferences, and the kids’ options make it family-friendly too. It’s worth noting that it’s best to book ahead, especially in whale season, as the unique location means limited seating. If you’re after a meal with a side of adventure and unforgettable ocean views, Bientang’s Cave is a must on your Hermanus list.

6. Walk Along the Cliff Path
This coastal trail offers some of the best views in Hermanus, think crashing waves, dramatic cliffs, and even the occasional whale sighting. It’s a beautiful, easy-to-navigate path that stretches for several kilometres along the coastline. We walked from Bientang’s Cave to Fick’s Restaurant and the views were simply breathtaking the entire way. It’s a great activity for families because it’s not too strenuous, stroller-friendly in parts, and gives you plenty of opportunities to stop and soak in the surroundings. Along the way, there are benches where you can pause and watch the ocean, and informative signposts about local marine life. It’s also a great way to walk off a delicious meal or build up an appetite for the next one! The fresh sea breeze and natural scenery make this one of Hermanus’ most rewarding experiences and it’s completely free.
7. Visit the Old Harbour Museum
A great way to mix a little learning into your trip! The museum showcases Hermanus’ history as a fishing village. You’ll find old boats, fishing gear, and vintage photos. It’s small and manageable for kids, and they’ll enjoy walking around the harbour too.

8. Check Out Fernkloof Nature Reserve
For families who love the outdoors, Fernkloof has something for everyone. There are multiple walking trails, from short, easy loops to more adventurous hikes, plus loads of indigenous plants and stunning views. Pack a picnic and make a morning of it!
9. Shop Local at the Arts & Crafts Market
Right near the town centre, this market is bursting with creativity. Local artists and crafters set up stalls with everything from beaded jewellery and woodwork to quirky gifts. But it’s not just arts and crafts, Hermanus also has lovely boutique shops tucked between its galleries and cafes. My hubby spoiled me with a Fenn wallet, a beautiful local South African brand and I could’ve easily spent hours browsing all the unique fashion, accessories, and home goods. It’s a fun way to support the community and let the kids pick out their own unique souvenirs.

10. Treat Yourself at the Hermanus Waterfront
Sometimes the simplest things are the best and nothing beats a sweet treat while exploring the Hermanus Waterfront. You’ll find everything from ice cream and popcorn to slushies, candy, and sweets. Kids (and grownups) will be in heaven! Grab your snack of choice and stroll along the harbour, people-watch from a bench, or snap a selfie with one of the whale sculptures nearby. It’s the perfect little reward after a day of adventure.
Bonus Tip: During whale season, restaurants and tours get booked up fast, so it’s a good idea to plan and book in advance to avoid missing out!
Whether you’re road-tripping with toddlers or exploring with teens, Hermanus is packed with fun for the whole fam. Let me know which of these you’d try first or share your own Hermanus favourites with me over on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube!
Until next time, Ash xoxo
